"M3172" features a small oval shape with a reduced vertical dimension.
It is a pair that combines a clean metal frame with a substantial bridge and intricate ornamentation.

With a compact 46mm lens width, it adopts an exceptionally narrow silhouette, even for an oval shape. This model takes the increasingly popular narrow oval look and finishes it with the signature presence characteristic of MATSUDA. Its clean, horizontally elongated balance and rounded contours add both sharpness and softness to the eyes.

The design draws inspiration from a folding eyewear style once crafted by MATSUDA. Inheriting this design, the thick, robust bridge is adorned with delicate engraving. In the center of the small front, this powerful structure and intricate decoration stand out.

The temples feature a textured pattern created using a specialized printing technique. The three-dimensional ornamentation, formed by overlapping fine lines, creates delicate shadows depending on how the light hits it, adding a rich character to the profile.

The BS-MBK colorway combines subdued silver with matte black. The black outlining the front of the rim sharpens the oval silhouette, while the contrast with the elegant sheen of the silver adds a cool expression to the classic structure.

The lenses feature a blue-gray gradient. The shade, which lightens toward the bottom, adds a sense of lightness to the eye area and blends naturally with the silver and black color scheme.

This piece condenses the powerful structure and delicate decoration unique to MATSUDA into a compact form.

Patterns and colours may vary slightly between individual frames and from the images shown.

About the brand
Brand logo
MATSUDA is a luxury eyewear brand founded in 1989 by Mitsuhiro Matsuda, the founder of the fashion brand NICOLE and a designer who led the Japanese fashion scene in the 1980s as one of the “Top Designers Six (TD6).”

Drawing on the aesthetic sensibilities cultivated during his career as a fashion designer, Matsuda fuses classic, avant-garde, and architectural elements. By combining highly sophisticated craftsmanship by skilled Japanese artisans with carefully selected materials such as titanium and acetate, the brand creates eyewear with the meticulousness of art pieces and an overwhelming presence.

The brand is defined by its delicate metalwork and substantial, three-dimensional structural expression. Its original designs, reminiscent of Victorian culture, Art Deco, and even steampunk, have earned high acclaim worldwide not merely as vision correction devices, but as “wearable art pieces.”

In the 1990s, the brand gained widespread support overseas after being worn by Hollywood movie stars and renowned artists. Its unique worldview and overwhelming sculptural beauty captivated many celebrities and fashion icons, propelling MATSUDA to global fame.

Although the brand was temporarily suspended afterward, it was revived in 2011 by a new design team. While carrying on the philosophy and craftsmanship established by Mitsuhiro Matsuda, it now offers collections that incorporate contemporary sensibilities.

Unswayed by the times or trends, MATSUDA continues to uphold its distinctive aesthetic. Its eyewear, a fusion of Japanese craftsmanship and fashion culture, continues to captivate eyewear enthusiasts around the world.
