MATSUDA “M1042” showcases the presence of thick acetate through smooth, precise cutting.

The square shape incorporates gentle curves, creating a classic look reminiscent of eyewear from the 1950s.

The thick front is sculpted in three dimensions from the surface to the sides, creating rich shadows depending on the viewing angle. Despite its bold, sharply defined silhouette, the gently refined lines prevent it from feeling overly heavy, resulting in a well-balanced design that sits comfortably on the face.

The gold-colored metal parts, including the temple cores and hinges, are adorned with MATSUDA’s signature intricate engravings. These details are subtly visible through the clear material, adding an understated artisanal charm to the minimalist acetate frame.

Color DNC is a deep clear navy. Based on a subdued dark navy, it reveals a vivid, transparent blue when it catches the light, lending depth and lightness to the thick frame. It also harmonizes beautifully with the gold-colored accents, creating an intellectual and refreshing impression.

Made from premium Japanese acetate, each pair is carefully shaped and polished by artisans in Sabae. A uniquely MATSUDA model that harmonizes bold volume with delicate details.

Patterns and colours may vary slightly between individual frames and from the images shown.

About the brand
Brand logo
MATSUDA is a luxury eyewear brand founded in 1989 by fashion brand “NICOLE” founder Mitsuhiro Matsuda, a designer who led the Japanese fashion scene in the 1980s as one of the “Top Designer Six (TD6).”

Drawing on the aesthetic sensibilities cultivated as a fashion designer, the brand fuses classic, avant-garde, and architectural elements. By combining highly advanced craftsmanship by skilled Japanese artisans with carefully selected materials such as titanium and acetate, MATSUDA creates eyewear with the meticulousness of art pieces and an overwhelming presence.

The brand is characterized by delicate metalwork and a profound, three-dimensional structural expression. Its original designs, reminiscent of Victorian culture, Art Deco, and even steampunk, have earned high acclaim worldwide not merely as vision correction devices, but as “wearable art pieces.”

In the 1990s, the brand gained strong support overseas after being worn by Hollywood movie stars and renowned artists. Its unique worldview and overwhelming sculptural beauty captivated many celebrities and fashion icons, propelling the name MATSUDA to global recognition.

Although the brand was temporarily suspended afterward, it was revived in 2011 by a new design team. While inheriting the philosophy and craftsmanship established by Mitsuhiro Matsuda, it now develops collections that incorporate contemporary sensibilities.

Unswayed by the times or trends, MATSUDA continues to uphold its unique aesthetic. Its eyewear, a fusion of Japanese craftsmanship and fashion culture, continues to captivate eyewear enthusiasts around the world.
