About the brand

About the MATSUDA Brand

MATSUDA is an eyewear brand launched in 1989 by fashion designer Mitsuhiro Matsuda. Its origins lie in the aesthetic sense of Matsuda, who led the Japanese fashion scene after founding "NICOLE" in 1967.

The frames are still manufactured in Japan today. The brand combines the sensibilities of fashion design with traditional Japanese eyewear craftsmanship, featuring delicate engravings on bridges and temples, three-dimensional components, and meticulously considered color schemes.

The brand is highly regarded by eyewear enthusiasts both in Japan and overseas for its unique designs and construction. Their eyewear's appearances in films like "Terminator 2" and "Iron Man 3" also helped propel the brand to global fame.

A Square Frame Featuring a Distinctive High Bridge and Nose Piece

The M3175 combines a wide square shape with a high bridge connecting the top of the lenses. By connecting the lenses at a high point, the frame creates a straight, linear line along the brow, giving these metal sunglasses a sharp appearance.

The lens contours have rounded corners to soften the rigidity of the square shape. Although it is a slender frame, the bridge and nose components each have a strong presence, creating a unique character through the combination of lines.

Plate-like Nose Pads Reminiscent of Pince-nez

A notable feature is the slender, plate-like nose pad. The vertical orientation along the nose bridge contrasts with the horizontal emphasis of the high bridge, creating the M3175's distinctive front-facing look. It is a piece where not only the lens shape but also the support parts contribute significantly to the overall design.

The nose width has also been refined from previous models. Beyond the classic aesthetic, the engineering of the nose area has been updated for better fit.

Stained Glass-Style Detailing and the Matte Black Look

The temples feature engravings inspired by stained glass. Intricate detailing is also applied to the side of the rims and the bridge base, showcasing the hallmark MATSUDA craftsmanship within a clean silhouette. The composition allows you to enjoy the high bridge and nose pad shape from the front, and the temple design from the side.

The col.MBK version pairs a matte black finish with deep blue lenses. The low-luster black subdues the metallic sheen, allowing the unique contours of the parts to stand out. It is recommended for those who want to enjoy MATSUDA’s structural design with a sharper, more understated impression than the luxury of gold.

Small Oval Frames with a Commanding, Thick Bridge

The M3172 features a small, 46mm-wide oval lens shape. Its narrow profile, with limited vertical height, adds a clean look to the classic oval shape. Even with its rounded contours, the design doesn't expand too far vertically, keeping the eye area looking compact.

Inspired by vintage folding eyewear, the most eye-catching feature is the thick, robust bridge connecting the lenses. By pairing a small front with powerful metal parts, the frame gives a substantial look to its otherwise light, oval silhouette.

SIZE 46□24-145

Contrast Between Thin Rims and Engraved Bridge

The bridge features fine engravings and decorative edges. Because the rims encircling the lenses are thin, the thickness and ornamentation in the center stand out clearly. Rather than making the whole frame chunky, the design puts the focus on the center, giving it a characteristic MATSUDA presence despite its compact size.

Temples with Textures Expressed via Special Printing

Unlike the bridge engravings, the striped patterns on the temples are created using special printing technology to express texture. This goes beyond simple color switching to add tactile variation to the surface. Notice the difference between the classic front ornamentation and the intricate patterns on the side—this contrast is a highlight of this model.

The col.BG-MBK features a sophisticated combination of antique gold and matte black. The black rims tighten the oval contour while making the gold bridge pop. The brown gradient lenses harmonize with the metallic colors, creating a warm, unified look.

The M3172 offers a compact, horizontal balance unlike larger sunglasses. While the shape itself is an easy-to-wear oval, its unique character is fully revealed through the thick bridge and temple textures.

M3171col.AG-MDG

A Well-Balanced Boston Shape with Three-Dimensional Side Details

The M3171 is a simple, well-balanced Boston-shaped metal frame. Its 48mm-wide rounded lens shape creates a soft look around the eyes. Because it is based on a versatile shape that suits any outfit, it is a model that makes it easy to incorporate MATSUDA's design into your daily life.

This approachable shape is complemented by side designs reminiscent of wind shields, delicate engravings, and temple patterns created with special printing. While it maintains a clean appearance from the front, it is characterized by the rich expressions seen from the side or at an angle.

Clean Front and Three-Dimensional Side Profile

Three-dimensional details resembling wind shields are placed on both sides of the front. Depth is added to the slender rims, and from an angle, the thickness and side decorations become apparent. By incorporating these 3D parts into a simple Boston-style frame, the design changes its impression depending on the viewing angle.

The arched bridge is also adorned with delicate engravings following the curve. The combination of the soft lens contour and dense metal ornamentation is truly appealing. Even without an aggressively bold shape, the craftsmanship shines through when viewed up close.

The MATSUDA Logo Peeking Out from Under the Striped Pattern

The temples feature striped patterns achieved through special printing technology. The fine lines add depth to the surface texture, while the MATSUDA logo is subtly visible underneath. This careful layering of the logo with the pattern is another testament to the thoughtfully integrated design.

The col.AG-MDG version combines antique gold with matte dark green. The shade of the muted gold blends with the deep green to create an elegant, understated look. It is highly recommended for those who want a Boston frame that is easy to wear, but also meticulous in color and detail.

A Narrow Octagon Frame with Three-Dimensional Side Design

The M3170 features a horizontal octagon lens shape with a slim vertical profile. The lenses are 50mm wide. With its straight top and bottom edges and beveled corners, it is a metal frame that creates sharp-looking eyes, distinct from both square and oval frames.

It maintains a wide, horizontal presence while keeping the vertical profile clean and narrow. Even as a polygon, the corners are not overly emphasized, retaining a gentle roundness. It is a design that allows you to wear a unique shape with a sense of composure.

3D Side Details Inspired by Wind Shields

The front sides feature protruding designs reminiscent of wind shields. From the front, the narrow contour stands out, while from the side, the three-dimensional depth appears. By combining thick parts with a thin metal frame, the piece achieves both a clean look and a sense of weight.

The arched bridge is finely engraved, while the temples utilize a special printing technology for a striped texture. You can enjoy different expressions from the bridge's metalwork versus the temple's surface texture. Note not only the fresh shape but also the variation in processing.

Sophisticated Antique Silver and Matte Navy Color Palette

The col.AS-MNV features a combination of antique silver and matte navy. The muted silver reveals the shadows of the engravings, while the deep navy tightens the lens contour. The blue-toned finish, slightly distinct from pure black, blends well with the sharp shape.

While sharing the side construction and temple processing with the M3171, the lens shape changes the entire impression. While the M3171 is a round Boston shape, the M3170 allows you to enjoy a horizontal, polygonal profile. It is recommended for those who want to combine a clean, narrow shape with quintessential MATSUDA craftsmanship.
