About UNIMATIC: A Thorough Explanation of its Origins, Design, and Watchmaking
UNIMATIC is a watch brand established in Italy in 2015. Building on a foundation of diver and military watches, the brand combines minimalist dials with robust, thick cases. Their design language is defined by a commitment to legibility, water resistance, and the durability of an everyday tool, all wrapped in a clean, concise aesthetic.
The brand was founded by two designers who studied industrial design at the Polytechnic University of Milan. Their perspective as watch enthusiasts, combined with a product design approach that prioritizes form, materials, and utility, underpins the craftsmanship at UNIMATIC. We take a detailed look at the brand’s features, from its founding story and the design of its core models to the Japan-exclusive JDM series and the UNILIGHT, which features three-dimensional luminous indices.

01 / ORIGIN & DESIGNERSThe Founding of UNIMATIC and the Two Designers
Industrial Design and a Shared Interest in Watches
UNIMATIC was founded by Giovanni Moro and Simone Nunziato. The two met at the Polytechnic University of Milan, where they shared an interest in watches while studying industrial design.

Industrial design is about more than just aesthetics. It is a field that considers how materials are used, how products are assembled, and how they feel when handled. It links the form of mass-produced tools to the behavior of the people using them. UNIMATIC watches reflect this, incorporating highly legible hands, large crowns, and durable cases—elements that make their purpose immediately clear.
Simone has also been responsible for the brand’s product photography, utilizing techniques like focus stacking to convey the minute details of the watches. The fact that the designers themselves are involved in how the dials and metal finishes are presented is a key insight into understanding the brand.

"Uniqueness" and "Self-Acting" in the Brand Name
The name "UNIMATIC" is a portmanteau derived from the Italian word UNICO (meaning unique or individual) and the Greek word AUTOMATOS (meaning self-acting).
The name reflects a focus on watch mechanisms and original design. While current models include automatic movements as well as battery-powered quartz and meca-quartz, the brand’s focus on selecting the appropriate mechanism for a model’s specific intended use contributes to its overall practicality.

From the First Diver to Five Core Forms
The first watch, released in 2015, was the Modello Uno U1-A—a diver’s watch produced in a limited edition of 300. Since then, the collection has expanded by varying the intended use and case shape.
| Year | Model | Core Concept |
|---|---|---|
| 2015 | Modello Uno | Diver’s watch with a rotating bezel |
| 2016 | Modello Due | Case inspired by vintage field watches |
| 2018 | Modello Tre | Chronograph function added |
| 2020 | Modello Quattro | Fixed bezel with a powerful, tool-like silhouette |
| 2023 | Modello Cinque | Brand’s first 36mm case |
Uno, Due, Tre, Quattro, and Cinque are the Italian words for one through five. These numbers do not indicate a hierarchy of price or performance, but rather serve as names for the basic models. A variety of specifications, including different dials, finishes, and movements, are created from these same core forms.

02 / CONCEPT & CRAFTDesign Themes and Product Philosophy
Organizing Dial Information to Emphasize What’s Essential
UNIMATIC is characterized by its black dials, light-colored indices, and broad hands. In their "CLASSIC" line, instead of utilizing large numerals, they signify time markers using circles, rectangles, and triangles.

The triangle at the 12 o’clock position serves as a landmark. The broad hour and minute hands are designed with black centers, making the light-colored luminous sections appear as if they are floating. The logo and minimal text are neatly tucked at the 6 o'clock position, leaving black negative space around the hands and indices.
Because of this negative space, the length of the hands, the spacing of the indices, and the thick bezel of the case become prominent. UNIMATIC’s simplicity isn’t just about making lines thinner; it’s a design that reduces elements to a few large, clearly defined shapes.
Design, Assembly, and Inspection in Italy
UNIMATIC is built upon Italian craftsmanship. In 2021, they brought assembly and inspection in-house near Milan, establishing a system to manage everything from design to final quality control.
The movements used to power the watches are sourced from Japanese and Swiss manufacturers. The CLASSIC UC1, UC2, and UC4 are equipped with the Japanese NH35A, while the UNILIGHT uses the Swiss Sellita SW200-1. They combine Italian design and assembly with mechanisms appropriate for the intended use.
Many models feature highly corrosion-resistant 316L stainless steel cases and scratch-resistant sapphire crystals. The anti-reflective coating applied to the inside of the crystal is another specification intended to improve dial legibility.

Even with stainless steel, the expression changes depending on the finish—brushed for fine lines or sandblasted for a matte, subdued look. The flat surfaces of the sides, the fine grooves on the bezel, and the rounded edge of the crown—the processing of the materials itself creates the watch’s appearance.

The "CLASSIC" Line and Limited Editions
CLASSIC is the permanent line that continues to expand upon UNIMATIC’s fundamental designs. Comprising the UC1, UC2, UC3, and UC4, these models utilize shared design cues like black dials and pale green luminous material to highlight differences in case and functionality.
In contrast, limited editions have specific production numbers and specifications for each release. They explore different expressions within the same core forms, such as varied dial colors, case materials, surface treatments, or collaborative branding. Understanding that there are both permanent and limited models is the key to understanding the UNIMATIC collection.
Individual numbering on the case back is another signature. CLASSIC models are numbered per year of production, whereas limited models are numbered according to their specific production run. It is helpful to distinguish between the serial numbering and the production limitation.

Collaborations that Broaden the Brand’s Horizon
Collaborations are a vital part of UNIMATIC’s identity. They have partnered with diverse entities, including MoMA, Disney, automotive manufacturer Morgan, and the Japanese tea caddy manufacturer Kaikado.
When there is a shared case or dial configuration, even small changes leave a lasting impression. Changing the color, adding text, or swapping materials—the UNIMATIC design has enough "negative space" to accommodate these variations. Comparing limited editions is a great way to grasp the clarity of their basic forms.

03 / FORM & FUNCTIONForm and Mechanism: A Visual Guide
UNO | The Silhouette of a Diver’s Watch Created by a Rotating Bezel
The CLASSIC UNO / UC1 is the model that defines the brand’s starting point. The case diameter is 40mm. The outer diameter including the bezel is 41.5mm, with the bezel slightly overhanging the case.

Unlike standard diver’s watches, the bezel doesn't display numerals, but instead features a single circular marker at the 12 o’clock position. The wide black ring allows the dial inside to appear crisp and clear. The fine grooves on the outer edge are designed for grip when rotating.
This is a 120-click unidirectional rotating bezel. By aligning the marker with the minute hand, you can measure elapsed time. The structure, which prevents backward rotation, is a fundamental feature of diver’s watches, ensuring that if the bezel is moved accidentally, the elapsed time is not miscalculated as longer than it actually is.
The UC1 is an automatic watch with 300m water resistance. Even with the black nylon strap, it distills function into a limited color palette. Looking at the photo, you can see how the black of the bezel, dial, and strap flows together, with only the stainless steel rim standing out.
DUE and QUATTRO | Fixed Bezels, Different Impressions
The CLASSIC DUE / UC2 and CLASSIC QUATTRO / UC4 are both models without a rotating bezel. The UC2 features a 38mm case, while the UC4 measures 40mm. Even with the same black dials, the shape of the surrounding metal and the height of the crystal change the impression significantly.

The UC2 combines a balanced case with a raised double-domed sapphire crystal. A thin metal rim is visible around the dial, and the curve of the crystal is highlighted when viewed from an angle. It’s a cohesive design reminiscent of vintage field watches.
The UC4 features a wide, fixed bezel and a flat crystal. Because of the wide metal surface on the front and the crown guards, it has a more muscular silhouette than the UC2. It essentially adapts the case structure of the diver-style UC1 into a non-rotating format.
Both models feature the NH35A automatic movement and 300m water resistance. Even with similar mechanisms and performance, changes in crystal curvature and case surface area create vastly different personalities for the watches.

TRE | Two Small Dials for Measurement
The CLASSIC TRE / UC3 is a chronograph model. A chronograph is a mechanism for measuring elapsed time in addition to regular timekeeping. The dial features two small sub-dials, and the right side of the case includes pushers for operation.

It is equipped with the VK64 meca-quartz movement. It uses a battery and quartz crystal to keep time, while combining mechanical parts for the chronograph operation. Unlike automatic watches powered by a mainspring, this mechanism requires periodic battery changes (estimated at approximately 3 years).
It retains the 40mm case, 41.5mm bezel, and 300m water resistance, while adding the measurement function. Because the small dials are also unified in black, the hands and light-colored indices catch the eye first, with the measurement details appearing as you shift your focus to the finer points.

Using Automatic, Quartz, and Meca-Quartz
UNIMATIC watches may look similar, but the mechanisms that power them vary. Automatics wind the mainspring through arm movement, while quartz models are battery-driven. Meca-quartz also uses a battery, but incorporates mechanical architecture for the chronograph function.
| Model | Mechanism | Power Reserve/Battery |
|---|---|---|
| UC1, UC2, UC4 | NH35A / Automatic | Approx. 41-hour power reserve |
| UC3 | VK64 / Meca-quartz | Approx. 3-year battery life |
| UT4-JDM, UT5-JDM | VH31A / Quartz | Approx. 2-year battery life |
| U5S-BL, U5S-BLN | Sellita SW200-1 / Automatic | Min 38-hour / Standard 41-hour reserve |
Power reserve is an estimate of how long the watch will run on a fully wound mainspring; this is different from battery life. Both vary based on usage conditions.
JDM | Japanese Domestic Market Models: Color and Impact Resistance
JDM stands for "Japanese Domestic Market," representing limited editions specifically for Japan. Released in 2025, the UT4-JDM "URBAN EXPLORER" and the UT5-JDM "CONCRETE JUNGLE" were produced in limited runs of 50 pieces each.

The UT4-JDM features a 40mm case with a matte gunmetal finish, paired with a dark olive strap. It’s a color palette that introduces a muted green to a slightly brighter-than-black metal hue. The UT5-JDM is 36mm, finished in a cool grey with a matching dial and strap and a sandblasted case.
Both are equipped with the VH31A quartz movement and feature a 360° shock-protection system. The movement is encased in a specially formulated TPU resin, with a protective ring added on the dial side, proving that the brand incorporates shock-absorbing design not just in the exterior case, but internally as well.
Testing for this system included dropping five test UT4 units onto concrete from a height of 1.22 meters, 26 times each, with no functional issues reported. Such empirical testing underscores their design as "tool watches."

UNILIGHT | Three-Dimensional Luminous Indices
UNILIGHT is a series featuring three-dimensional luminous indices. Both the U5S-BL and U5S-BLN utilize the 36mm Modello Cinque case. By installing each index individually, they create a sense of depth that differs from flat printing.

In bright conditions, the thickness and the sides of the indices create subtle shadows depending on the angle of the light. In dark conditions, these indices act as markers by releasing stored light. This dual utility—daytime sculptural quality and nighttime legibility—is the standout feature.
The U5S-BL is brushed stainless steel, while the U5S-BLN features a black DLC finish. Both come with olive-colored straps. With the silver case, the metal rims appear bright; with the black finish, the dark colors carry from the dial through to the case, making the white of the indices pop.

The movement is a Swiss Sellita SW200-1 with 300m water resistance. For a 36mm case, it features a 22mm lug width. Combining a small case with a wide strap gives the watch a substantial, solid presence. Production is limited to 300 pieces for each model.

Luminescence and Water Resistance as Functional Design
The Super-LumiNova used for the hands and indices in the CLASSIC line is a material that stores light to glow in the dark. The color scheme of placing pale colors on a black dial not only improves daytime contrast but also ensures nighttime readability.

Water resistance is maintained not just by the case itself, but by screw-down case backs, crowns, and internal gaskets. The UC1, UC2, UC3, UC4, the two JDM models, and the two UNILIGHT models are all water-resistant to 300 meters. The large crown and thick case are shapes that serve a practical function.
As a rule, ensure the crown is securely tightened before exposing the watch to water, and do not operate the crown or pushers while underwater. Maintaining water resistance requires proper usage and periodic check-ups.
UNIMATIC’s hallmark is the ability to take watches with such serious functionality and refine them into pieces that fit easily into everyday life. Case width, metal luster, strap color, dial negative space—much like comparing the frames or materials of eyeglasses, this is a brand that rewards you for looking at the fine details to find the one that fits your personal style.
